What Are OSHA Outreach Training Cards?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Training Program trains workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards on job sites. Upon completion of an authorized course, participants receive an official plastic Department of Labor (DOL) completion card.
OSHA 10-Hour: Entry-Level Site Access
- Audience: Entry-level apprentices, laborers, and trade helpers.
- Curriculum: Covers basic safety hazards including Fall Protection, Struck-By, Caught-In-Between, and Electrical shock hazards (the "Focus Four").
- Typical Requirement: Mandatory on many commercial sites in NY, NV, MO, MA, and on all federal Davis-Bacon prevailing wage projects.
OSHA 30-Hour: Foremen, Leads, & Safety Supervisors
- Audience: Journeymen, foremen, superintendents, site safety officers, and project managers.
- Curriculum: In-depth training on health hazards, managing safety and health programs, scaffolding safety, crane operations, and excavations/trenching.
- Career Benefit: Holding an OSHA 30 card immediately qualifies tradespeople for lead foreman positions and commands higher hourly rates.
How to Ensure Your Card Is Legitimate
Always verify that your training provider is authorized by OSHA to issue plastic Department of Labor cards with tamper-resistant QR codes. Beware of unregulated certificate mills that offer "Instant OSHA Diplomas"—general contractors will turn you away at the gate without an authentic plastic DOL card.
